Learn how to maintain the safety and well-being of horses (and yourself!), and further your knowledge of the equine industry.
Topics include:
- welfare, behaviour and education
- health, nutrition and fitness
- breeding and team leadership
- business management.
How you'll learn
Attend face-to-face classes at UQ Gatton's world-class facilities over 3 days (Monday to Wednesday), and submit assessments online.
Assessment
You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including written exams and reports, oral assessments and practical demonstrations.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Vaccination requirements
As you'll be exposed to animals and agricultural environments as part of your learning, immunisations against tetanus are mandatory. You'll need to provide evidence of immunisation when you start your program.
You may also require vaccination against Q fever, lyssavirus, rabies or influenza (flu), depending on the work and environment within which you interact with animals.
If you fail to complete mandatory requirements, this may affect your ability to fulfil the inherent requirements of your program.

If you have recent work experience you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.

Introductory safety session
Learn how to maintain the safety and well-being of equines (and yourself!) during this 3-week introductory session. This mandatory training covers the basics of working with horses, including:
- safe handling techniques
- grooming, feeding and watering
- nutrition and basic veterinary care
- safety protocols in equine workplaces.
Term 1: Equine welfare, behaviour and education
Learn how to develop, implement and monitor plans related to:
- safety protocols
- biosecurity and infection controls
- animal welfare and horse behaviour
- equine training methods.
Term 2: Equine health, nutrition and fitness
Topics include:
- nutrition and feeding plans
- healthcare
- fitness
- biomechanics, confirmation and movement.
Term 3: Equine breeding and team leadership
Topics include:
- lead team effectiveness
- lead and manage effective workplace relationships
- identify and select animals for breeding.
Term 4: Equine business management
Topics include:
- manage budgets and financial plans
- manage legal, insurance and business aspects of horse establishments.
Careers
You may find employment in the following roles:
- assistant horse trainer
- equine events manager
- equine facility manager
- equine office administrator
- exercise rider.
