Designed for senior secondary students (Years 10, 11 and 12) as part of UQ Skills’ High School Program, this entry-level qualification will provide you with foundational skills to work across the allied health sector.
Allied health assistants help professionals in health sectors such as physiotherapy, speech pathology, nutrition and podiatry.
You’ll learn how to:
- understand and apply medical terminology in a variety of healthcare settings
- work collaboratively in health and community service settings
- prepare safe and nutritious meals
- use key business tools and technologies.
How you'll learn
This program is delivered over 12 months (4 high school terms), through a combination of online and in-person activity.
During school term you'll attend training at:
- UQ-based model: UQ Gatton or UQ St Lucia one day per week
- School-based model: On-site at your school (minimum student numbers required).
Assessment
You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including case study assessments, projects and practical demonstrations.

There are no formal entry requirements for this program.
You can apply for this program if you are in Years 10, 11 or 12 and have the approval of your parent/guardian and school.
All UQ Skills programs require access to a computer with a Windows operating system, up-to-date versions of Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader, and a reliable internet connection.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) testing
You’re required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy test as part of the enrolment process. This helps us identify and plan for any learning or support needs you may have before you start your training.
Recognition of Prior Learning
If you have recent work experience you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.
Create your USI
You must provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI) before we can accept your enrolment.

Once you’ve completed your Certificate II in Health Support Services HLT23221, you may wish to continue your studies and complete the Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance HLT33021 during your next school year.
You can transfer credit from your Certificate II into the Certificate III, which means you'll only need to successfully complete 2 additional units to gain the higher qualification. Contact us for details.

Completing a vocational qualification at school can open a lot of doors, whether you’re considering undertaking additional applied studies or heading to university.
Often a relevant certificate II is the prerequisite for higher level qualifications and may even count as credit.
