For Sandra Strenzel, Program Support Officer with UQ Skills, supporting people has always been at the heart of her work.

With more than a decade of experience helping students navigate challenges, from mental health to disability support, Sandra says advocating for their success has become second nature.

“I’m a big advocate for accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion and connecting students with the support they need to achieve their goals,” she said.

“It’s important that students are supported on an individual basis, catering for their specific needs.”

That student-first mindset is paired with a lifelong love of agriculture.

Growing up in Toowoomba, Sandra spent every school holiday on her grandparents’ cattle and cropping property in Western Queensland. It was a place that shaped who she is today.

“I would spend time out there at every opportunity and still do.

“That exposure from an early age sparked my love for agriculture and livestock, especially horses and cattle.”

With strong ties to agriculture and a passion for supporting students and staff, joining UQ Skills felt like a natural fit.

“With my education and background, I felt I had something valuable to contribute.

“Soon after starting in the role, I quickly felt accepted as a member of the team and I’ve loved every minute since.”

Her Program Support Officer role is as diverse as it is rewarding, spanning staff and student support, program logistics, admin, finance, events, staff travel, communications and hands-on training delivery assistance.

“No 2 days are ever the same, and that is what keeps it interesting.”

“I’ve been able to develop a wide range of skills and the flexibility to jump in wherever I am needed.”

But at the core of everything she does is her commitment to students, celebrating their achievements and helping them overcome challenges.

“I am proud to be part of a team that genuinely cares about our students.

“All of the trainers are so knowledgeable and passionate about their specific areas that it makes supporting them and their programs a pleasure.

“I genuinely enjoy coming into work each day.”

For Sandra, success is defined by one simple measure.

“If I can leave work at the end of the day feeling satisfied that I have supported our staff and students to the best of my ability, I’ve achieved success.”
